Call to Yackathon about Hackathons in New York in 2013[]

"Nathanael Edward Bassett" <nathanael.bassett@gmail.com> Date: Apr 12, 2013 5:36 PM Subject: [openny] OccupyData Yackathon: Conversations on hacking as civic engagement - April 28th To: <openny-list@meetup.com> Cc:

Hello all,

I wanted to let you know about an event that we're organizing for Sunday, April 28th, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at The New School. Many of you have been involved in hackathons for various civic and social causes, as a way of sharing skills, promoting tools, or to address specific issues. We're excited to be hosting a "yackathon," a collective conversation about hackathons, in particular the ethos, process and outcomes emerging from the OccupyDataNYC initiative, since it's inception over the past year.

This Yackathon is also a chance to reflect, share, and collaborate on the work we've each done in the past. We want to know how we can make a hackathon a more effective tool for achieving our goals, whether that's getting people to work together on new projects, producing results out of the projects, or just getting some work done and having a good time with a loose community of different skills.

Maybe you enjoy working with data - at the yakathon, we'll be using an older technology common to every hackathon's success - conversation. The datasets we're drawing from come from our own experience. We want to "hack" the hackathon itself. We feel like you could make a valuable contribution, and walk away with some experience that would help you  participate more effectively or better organize other hackathons in the future.

For more information and to let us know youre coming for the event or at least part of it, visit the meetup page here<http://www.meetup.com/OccupyData/events/113257952/?a=ra1_vl&_af_eid=113257952&_af=event>(you can also suggest topics in advance and comment on others). We hope to see you at our Hackathon Yackathon!
