Cloud Computing has been called e Great Equalizer, wrote Kirk Howard[]

The proliferation of public and private cloud services has been the great technology equalizer between small/medium sized organizations and large enterprises.

In the past, some small companies had a server or two in an uncooled closet optimistically attached to a UPS hoping the power stayed on and their DSL or Cable Modem connection was reasonably reliable. This was a great technological disadvantage to large enterprises that could afford large rooms of computing resources with redundant network connections, power, etc.

The cloud has brought enterprise class collaboration to companies as small as one person. While the enterprise has had Exchange (or Lotus Notes) for over a few decades smaller companies just had either Internet Provider based accounts without calendaring/collaboration features or a Small Business edition of Windows server that you hoped you could keep online in your closet. Google Apps and Office 365 have closed the gap completely.

Utilizing currently available cloud technology still requires an investment in technical expertise. Be sure to properly handle information security and figure out how to gain all of the advantages the technology has to offer.

Small and midsize companies should see cloud computing as a welcome investment without needing to be concerned about putting servers in an office closet.
