Water Safety in Open Bodies of Water

For many people, warm weather means fun in the water. Open bodies of water always pose a risk of drowning but you can reduce your risk by creating a safer water experience.

Lesson 17 Notes[]

Social Skills: Cooperation (ebook)

  9. On back, arms at side, kick dolphin (improves sensation of dolphin like movement through the body).

  10. Dolphin kick under water, arms outstretched, hands together, to help the streamline position and to help get "long" dolphin feel.

  11. Dolphin kick, under water, arms at side, kick fast, to experience speed of movment.

  12. With arms at sides, dolphin kick while lying on right side. (Keep back straight so that movement of whole leg may be felt.)

  13. Repeat drill 12, but work on left side.

  14. Kick 25 right side, 25 on back, 25 on left side and 25 on front.

  15. Use fins in any of the kicking drills to assist flexibility of ankles.

Starts and Turning Drills for Back Crawl:[]

For the Backstroke start, the important practice is the push-off on the back.

1. Practice across pool. Place feet on wall about hip width apart, push with hands at sides (measure distance).

  2. As in drill 1, but this time stretch arms to full extension with hands touching as push is executed (measure distance).

  3. As in drill 2 but insist on full ankle extension !o arrive at most streamlined position.

4. Repeat practice 3 but have swimmer drop feet lower on wall so he/she pushes off from a deeper position.

5. As drill 4 plus complete the width by introducing flutter kick.

6. With feet in stagger position on wall, hands gripping bar at shoulder width, practice throwing the arms laterally to have hands touch at full arms extension.

7. As above but have swimmer bring head forward as arms go back (preventing deep entry and slowing of start).

8. As 7 plus introduction of leg kick as speed slackens.

9. As 8 plus one arm pull. Emphasize that this is is the most important stroke in the swim. It is the stroke that launches the body into speed.

10. To facilitate the clearing of the hips over the water at the start have a rope, noodle or surgical tubing about one meter back from start and have swimmers practice clearing it each time.
