Week 3, Lesson 10 Edit

Lesson: Social Skills: Collaboration (ebook)   Backstroke week, sorta.

Back Crawl or Backstroke   British Swimming has been weakest in back crawl for decade. Same too with WPIAL and City Swimming.   Perhaps the best known performers, on the dorsal stroke, relative to Europe and the World have been John Brockway, Graham Sykes among the men and Judy Grinham, Margaret Edwards and Natalie Steward among the women, and those days are long gone.   On examination, this stroke is not nearly so popular as are the other strokes, partly I suspect because lying on one's back, groping for unknown water and pushing forward to go backward does not sound the most attractive of propositions. I feel also that with the advent of the larger squads, there is a lot less opportunity for the Backstroke swimmer to do specific work - plus the preponderance of circle swimming necessary to accommodate the bigger numbers makes life extremely difficult for the youngster with aspirations to being a Backstroke expert.   However, as any one who has had the privilege to have watched Roland Maithes swim, will attest, the stroke, when performed properly is a joy to behold. Before beginning to drill the squad it would certainly be helpful to use a video of a good backstroke swimmer, so the fluency of the stroke may be seen, and the aims of the exercise stated.   We with PPS Summer Dreamers, swim indoors, no excuses for the sun, unlike California. Small groups on breastroke to get everyone legal.

Breaststroke Arms Drlls:Edit

Back Crawl or Backstroke

British Swimming has been weakest in back crawl for decade.

However, as any one who has had the privilege to have watched Roland Maithes swim, will attest, the stroke, when performed properly is a

joy to behold. Before beginning to drill the squad it would certainly be help

ful to use a video of a good backstroker, so the fluency of the stroke may be

seen, and the aims of the exercise stated.
