Water Polo is coming

As we improve at swimming and are stronger in the water, we play water polo games. Two teams. Two goals. Only the goalie gets to use two hands on the ball at the same time.

Lessons, Week 1, Day 5

Coming next week:

  • Breastroke, kicking, jumping, treading
  • Egg beater kicking, body positions, umbrella formation, hole play, ball side defense,
  • Static stretching, yoga stretching, partner kicking, jousting

Lesson: Safety, Drowning is the fourth major cause of deaths in the United States. (ebook)   Peek at Breastroke week!

Kick words: Up, Flex, Out, Together, Point, Glide.

Do clown-walk (only have heels touch the ground) from the bus to the pool area. Must be walking and lifting toes off of ground to use the muscles under shin.

TEST: Breastroke Sit

Of all the four strokes, the rule book most precisely describes breaststroke. It also seems to have been changing regularly over the years. Two distinct methods have been used in World Competition: the "natural" method, as used in the past by David Wilkie and Tracy Caulkins and many of the Russian and East Germans, noticeable, for its high bobbing action. The other was called the “formal” method, which is nearer to the flat body position breastoke used for years, and favored by the U.S.A. However, there are successful swimmers in all parts of the world using one or the other of these methods.   For the youngster in training, the drills and techniques needed to develop a good stroke are not necessarily altered. Leg kicks have to be made legal and strong with an ability to glide some distance (up to a body length), arms and upper body strengthened, timing perfected and the breathing injected before either method is ready for adoption.

  • Kick breast on wall.
  • Kick breast off of bottom of pool.
  • Kick breast off of side of pool
  • Kick breast with board on front. Kick breast with board on back body position.
  • Breast legs, arms free
  • Kick and glide.
  • TEST: Bow and Arrow with mates.

Review Freestyle:

26. Swim front crawl with head raised watching entry of hands. (Strengthens arms, improves entry position and assists high elbow recovery).   27. Swim front crawl with face on water, watching for paths of thumbs through the water (useful for improving bend in arms and to stop the very deep reaching especially on non-breathing side).   28. Swim front crawl as 27, but insist on touching thighs with thumbs before recovery. (Keeps stroke long).   29. Swim front crawl, directing swimmers to try to brush ears with shoulders (Assists flexibility of shoulders in stroke).   30. Swim front crawl, exaggerating roll of body, keeping head aligned all the time with the body, so that swimmer rolls enough to clear mouth for breath. (Helps o clear shoulders, and to use opposite shoulder in pull).   31. Swim front crawl, trying to put into practice the points practiced in the session.
